Fair Isle is een eiland ten Noorden van Schotland dat bekend staat om zijn authentieke breimethode. Het eiland is het meest afgelegen eiland van het Verenigd Koninkrijk, en er wonen dan ook nog slechts een handvol mensen. De 60 inwoners van dit eiland verdienen veelal hun geld met Fair Isle Knitting.
Bij Fair Isle breien worden veel verschillende patronen gebruikt. Het gaat meestal om symmetrische patronen zoals de Noorse ster en het OXO-patroon. Ga je Fair Isle breien dan kun je het beste kiezen voor een garen dat voor een groot deel uit katoen bestaat. Om te zorgen dat je het patroon goed ziet kun je bovendien het beste kiezen voor contrasterende kleuren. Wil je er zeker van zijn dat je een mooi resultaat krijgt dan moet je niet te strak breien.

** Please note: pattern is written in English ** **Knitting Pattern** Technique: Knit in the round. This scarf with many, many fair isle patterns was a pleasure to knit! I couldn’t stop knitting, because I wanted to see how the next pattern would look like! The pattern has 11 pages and has more than 40 fair isle patterns (motifs)! These motifs are charted with symbols, so you can print the pages in black & white. Size: 6,5 x 48 inch / 16 x 122 cm) (measured lying flat) (you can make the scarf longer if you want, just repeat the motifs you liked the most). Stitches used: stockinette stitch (knit all stitches in the round), knit 2/purl 2 for the ribbing. Supplies: – Scraps of 100% wool, I used Drops Baby Merino in 21 colors, but you could use less colors. – Circular knitting needle size 4 US, 16 inch long / 3,5 mm, 40 cm long – Stitch markers – Tapestry needle You can use as many colors you like, so you don’t have to use 21 colors! Just go through your stash and pick the colors you love. I would recommend to use at least 8 different colors. You could use colors in one color range, such as all blues, greens etc. But light and dark grey, black, white and a touch of yellow or pink would also be lovely! Make sure you have enough contrast between the colors you are using per pattern. Enjoy picking your colors and enjoy the knitting! You also can use acrylic, cotton or mix yarn! Your first fair isle project should be easy, but still beautiful! This Fair Isle Knit Hat Pattern should do the trick. Using only three colors of yarn, and never more than two colors per round, you’ll never find yourself confused while working through this fair isle hat. The stranded colorwork design gives it a wintry look, and the easy care of the Red Heart With Love yarn it uses means you can wear it and wash it again and again without worrying about it losing its shape.

En kan nog lugnt konstatera att jag har snöat in på det här med Fair Isle-stickning. Det är så fantastiskt kul – och svårt – att kombinera färger och mönster. Möjligheterna att lyckas och misslyckas är oändliga! Nu har jag stickat en mössa som jag känner mig ganska så nöjd med. Den är lagom varm och skön, tycker jag fick ihop färgerna hyfsat den här gången. Men det krävde lite omstickning och en extra utflykt till garnaffären för att få rätt rosa nyans. Först trodde jag att fair-isle var det engelska ordet för flerfärgsstickning, men så är det inte. Flerfärgsstickning kallas “Stranded Knitting” och Fair Isle är en speciell metod som kommer från Shetlandsöarna norr om Skottland. I podden Nördic Knitting har Johanne Ländin och Heléne Wallin ett helt avsnitt om Fair Isle och Shetlandsöarna, jag kan rekommendera detta om du vill veta mer. Du hittar avsnitt samt mer om Fair Isle på deras blogg och även länken till poddasvnittet här. Det är alltså så att mönstrena bygger på designen OXO. Mellan dessa rader av OXO-mönster stoppar en gärna små mönster som kallas for “peeries”, som är ett ord för liten på skottska. I mina mönster har jag utgått från Mary Jane Mucklestones bok “200 Fair Isle Designs”. Det är nog den bästa och mest använda stickboken jag har. En använder ofta många färger, till min mössa hade jag totalt 8 färger. Men en stickar aldrig med fler än två färger samtidigt vilket gör att det faktiskt inte är speciellt svårt. Alla mönster är strikt geometriska och de byggs upp med en bakgrundsfärg och en mönsterfärg. Bakgrundsfärgerna får gärna gå i varandra, liksom mönsterfärgerna. Men det måste finnas kontrast dem emellan. Mittenraden är oftast i en avvikande färg, så att det sticker ut lite grand. I min mössa som är helt i röda och vit/gråa toner är mittenfärgen ljust gul. Jag kan sitta hur länge som helst och leka fram mönster i ett Excelark, så här såg mitt mössmönster ut: Ofta används garner från Shetland, det finns två olika: Spindrift från Jamieson’s of Shetlan och 2ply Jumperweight from Jamieson & Smith. Båda säljs i 25-gramsnystan och finns i en mängd färger, vilket gör det lätta att kombinera och hitta rätt nyanser. De är också ganska löst spunna vilket gör att färgerna går ihop fint när man tvättat plagget. Dessvärre är de relativt dyra och delvis därför är det nog få affärer som säljer dessa. De finns på nätet, men man vill gärna stå och jämföra nyanser på plats. Jag har dels köpt från Luftmaskan (länk ovan), dels från Maker14 som är en liten garnaffär i Gamla Stan i Stockholm. I min mössa och i mina fingervantar har jag blandat med Röros Lammullgarn, som förvisso är lite tunnare men som funkar i denna typ av plagg. Annars är Rauma Finull bara snäppet tjockare och funkar också att blanda med Jamiesongarnerna. Det finns en nackdel att sticka fair-isle: Det blir många trådar att fästa. Tydligen är det så att trådarna på gamla fair-isletröjor bara är ihopknutna. Så wild&crazy är jag inte, men med ett avsnitt av krimserien Shetland på SVT Play så är det rätt så snabbt gjort ändå ;) Ullgarnet repar inte upp sig så lätt så det blir mest att väva in trådarna lite. I toppen av mössan har jag gjort en krona. Jag freestylade lite utifrån lite bilder. Blev som våffelhjärtan nästan :) Nu är mitt stora problem att de fingervantar jag stickade i höstas dessvärre inte alls passar till min mössa. Jag får nog helt enkelt sticka ett par till, som matchar.
